Flying Koi carp around the world

American Airlines Cargo has transported koi carp, an ancient and long-living ornamental fish, in increasing volumes for 20 years. The carrier’s team in Japan exported record shipments last year, totalling over 19.1 t to Los Angeles and 9.6 t to Dallas/Fort Worth alone. The most beautiful of the specimens can be valued at USD 2 million each.

Because of their beauty and elegance, the national fish of Japan are highly prized by collectors, particularly in Hong Kong, the USA, China, Germany, the Netherlands, and Indonesia, which accounts for some 60% of their export value.

Emma Oliver, director cargo sales Europe, Africa & Middle East, and Asia Pacific: "They must be transported on direct flights due to their sensitivity, with great precautions taken to tailor their travel accommodations to their oxygen needs." (ah)
