Five new terminals and fleet automation

Switzerland’s federal railways (SBB) is further expanding its railfreight services and planning to transport 60% more goods by rail by 2050, as envisaged in its "Suisse cargo logistics" concept.

Among other things, the Swiss railway company has earmarked CHF 1 billion for five new terminals between Geneva and St. Gallen and five to eight city hubs. The company will invest a further CHF 500 million in the automation of its vehicle fleet by 2040.

SBB intends to operate Swiss railfreight services in partnership with logistics players and terminal operators in future. It has also reported that it will be divesting its minority stake of just under 2% in "Cargo sous terrain", a project for underground freight transport. (ben)
