Fishy layover to save fuel and emissions
Ten days ago, on 13 October 2023, the fourth Lufthansa Cargo B777F, which has been equipped by Lufthansa Technik with "Aeroshark" technology since February this year, entered service.
Jointly developed with BASF, this functional surface film imitates the microscopic structure of shark skin. It reduces the aerodynamic drag on the fuselage and engine nacelles of the aircraft, resulting in significant emissions and fuel savings (about 1%).
Calculated over Lufthansa Cargo's entire 777 fleet, this will save more than 4,000 t of kerosene per year and thus almost 13,000 t of CO2 emissions. This corresponds to about 53 cargo flights from Frankfurt to Shanghai. CEO Ashwin Bhat: "Together with the lightweight cargo equipment we already use today, this technology will enable us to save 5,493 t of kerosene per year." (ah)
