First yard in Bangladesh certified by NYK
The Japanese Group NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) has certified PHP Ship Recycling Facility as the first yard in Bangladesh for complying with NYK’s standards for ship-recycling measures pertaining to the environment, safety, occupational health, and respect for human rights.
The yard has tried to minimise environmental pollution and industrial accidents by putting a large amount of high-quality iron in its ships. NYK Group sends supervisors to confirm that its standards are being respected. PHP Ship Recycling Facility is Bangladesh’s first certified yard, joining 30 certified yards in India, three in China and one in Turkey.
NYK sets its standards in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, which in its turn was adopted by a higher institution, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2009. (lh)
