First non-craneable semi-trailers carried by rail
The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is connecting Ukraine to its intermodal network in partnership with Ukrainian Railways (UZ). The first test train travelled from Kyiv, Ukraine, to the Rail Cargo Terminal BILK in Hungary and transported non-craneable semi-trailers carrying building materials by rail.
This is a completely new concept, because until now it was only possible to transport the non-craneable semi-trailers on this route by truck, the company said. The change was made possible by road-rail-link (r2L) technology, which was developed by VTG and Vega.
The first test train is to lay the foundation for a regular high-frequency intermodal connection between Kyiv, Vienna, and other European hubs. (ben)
