First H2-locomotive for Chile
The Chinese rail manufacturer CRRC has delivered a hydrogen-powered locomotive to Chile. The shunting locomotive was ceremoniously handed over to the narrow-gauge railway FCAB, which connects the port of Antofagasta (Chile) with mining operations in Bolivia. It is designed as a fuel cell hybrid locomotive and tailor-made for its operating route, environment, as well as Chile’s specific conditions and needs.
With a total power of up to 1,000 kW, the locomotive is equipped with large-capacity batteries and a 35 MPa high-pressure on-board hydrogen storage system. According to CRRC, it is the first hydrogen-powered locomotive to run in Chile and in South America as a whole. (ben)
