First gearless vessel to call Port Moresby
Motukea International Terminal (MIT), a unit of International Container Terminal Services (Ictsi) located in the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby, has welcomed its first gearless vessel. This is a ship without cranes that relies on shore-based equipment at its ports of call to load and unload cargo.
According to the terminal operator, the arrival and handling of the country's first international gearless vessel, the Indonesian-flagged "Meratus Samarinda", shows the trust and confidence that Meratus Line placed in ICTSI South Pacific.
The operator added that the visit had opened the door for more gearless vessels to call at MIT in Port Moresby and the South Pacific International Container Terminal (Spict) in Lae Tidal Basin, the two terminals it runs in Papua New Guinea. (lh)
