Firms demand the expansion of the port of Riesa
Central Germany’s logistics network supports plans to expand the inland port of Riesa on the river Elbe. The trimodal container terminal already handles more than 40,000 teu per year, and has thus reached the limit of its capacities.
A new port terminal would be beneficial to many industrial and commercial companies that dispatch their products from this hub to markets worldwide by train and inland barge.
In spite of two consecutive years of low water levels in 2017 and 2018, Riesa achieved excellent results and therefore confirmed its importance as a logistics hub. In 2018, the port generated a record container throughput of 43,500 teu. Connections to alternative modes of transport helped compensate for the low water levels. (kd)
