Finnish operator banks on Trans-Caspian route

Nurminen has closed its Russian office ‘for the time being’ and is developing a Trans-Caspian route from Asia to Europe as a result of ‘extensive changes in the operating environment’ since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Last week Nurminen signed an agreement with the Kazakh state railway enterprise KTZE to commercialise the new line.

The route starts in Southeastern Asia and China and runs through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia to Central European countries. The cooperation aims to get a test train ready in April-June this year, and to launch commercial traffic between July and September. The parties also agreed to intensify cooperation on the China–Finland route, focusing on the use of Kazakh rail wagons. (ben)
