Fewer trucks crossing Swiss Alps
Last year, the volume of goods transported across the Swiss Alps by truck and rail was 4.6% down from the levels of 2018. This drop is mainly due to the economic downturn, particularly in Italy. In nominal terms, the amount of truck journeys fell by 500,000 to 900,000.
The share of heavy goods vehicles at the two most important border crossings – Gotthard and San Bernardino – decreased, while traffic at the Simplon and Great St. Bernhard passes inched up slightly compared to the previous year.
More than a third of the goods are shipped through the Alps with containers, swap bodies and semitrailers in unaccompanied combined traffic (UKV), the Swiss federal transport authority reported. (ben)
