Fednav brings Hamburg closer to the Great Lakes

Since this month, April 2023. the shipping company Fednav from Montréal (Canada) has been connecting the Port of Hamburg with the Great Lakes in North America with its "Atlantic Lakes Line" service.

The FAL Line calls at Hamilton in Canada and Cleveland in USA. The first so-called "laker" to dock at Terminal C. Steinweg was the "Federal Oshima" with a deadweight tonnage of 36,000 t, carrying steel and project cargo.

Axel Mattern, chairman of Hafen Hamburg Marketing: "This new service already indicates that there will be more and more diversification of the lines. Regions with strong demand, such as USA and Africa, are increasingly becoming the focus of shipping companies."

MSC, for example, has been connecting Hamburg with its NWC-Canary-WAF line via Antwerp, London and Le Havre with the West African ports of Tema, Lomé, Lagos, Abidjan and Dakar since February 2023. (lh)
