Faster handling of reefer containers
The Port of Rotterdam Authority, the port’s customs authorities, GroentenFruit Huis and Portbase have joined forces to speed up the handling of reefer containers, which currently account for more than 15% of the containers shipped via the Port of Rotterdam.
The cooperation focuses on the interaction between customs authorities, freight brokers, terminals, shipping companies and other supply chain partners.
The project team analysed the customs processes and came to the conclusion that there is a relatively large potential for improvement, particularly concerning physical inspections and checks with sniffer dogs, mainly due to manual processes.
A pilot project was therefore launched this spring, with the aim of digitalising manual processes. All customs checks are already registered digitally via the Inspectieportaal in the Portbase port community system.
"Further digitalisation will shorten processing times and minimise waiting times," says Daco Sol, programme manager logistics, supervision & supply chain at GroentenFruit Huis. (cd)
