Fading WestJet Cargo to sell Virgin Atlantic capacity

WestJet Cargo has started selling cargo capacity on Virgin Atlantic’s wide-body flights from Toronto to London Heathrow and beyond under a new block-space agreement that takes effect today, 31 March.

The deal marks Virgin’s return to the Canadian market after more than 20 years and offers up to 20 t of daily capacity, with access to key destinations including Delhi, Dubai and Johannesburg. All freight moves under a WestJet Cargo air waybill (prefix 838).

The launch comes as WestJet, headquartered in Calgary, confirms that it will end its dedicated freighter operations, and that executive vice-president Cargo Kirsten de Bruijn will leave the company later this year.

Two of four freighters are already parked and the carrier is reassessing the fleet’s future. Despite this shift, WestJet will continue its commercial partnership with Virgin Atlantic, using its passenger network to serve the expanded route. (ah)
