Extending Russia's broad gauge railway to Turkey?
The heads of the railway companies in Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan have signed a trilateral memorandum on cooperation to develop rail transport.
The memorandum provides for joint action to ensure regular rail traffic along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route, the establishment of commercially viable tariffs and the attraction of a new cargo base.
To achieve these goals, the three parties will consider implementing a project to build a second, 1,520 mm broad gauge track alongside the 76 km long Akhalkalaki (Georgia) - Kars railway line in Turkey and a terminal and logistics centre in Kars. (ben)
