Extended loop allows two-way railfreight traffic

Railfreight capacity on the Yelta Line has received a boost with the extension of the loop at Emu along the Yelta Line in Victoria, Australia.

The extra 500 m of track make the loop located between Dunolly and St Arnaud long enough to allow two opposing 1,200 m freight trains to pass each other. Long trains can now travel in either direction on this route at the same time.

The extension is part of the Murray Basin rail project, Victoria’s big railfreight network upgrade programme. It follows the recent opening of a new passing loop at Elmhurst between Ararat and Maryborough. (ben)
