Exploring the Antarctic with Astre
European-based logistics network Astre is reaching far south. It is one of the main sponsors of the "Polar Pod" expedition, which will explore the waters at the South Pole from 2024.
It is the next project of the well-known French polar explorer Jean-Louis Étienne. With the Polar Pod research platform, the core of the project, he wants to study ocean currents around the southern polar cap and gain new insights into climate change, among other things.
The research platform will drift around the South Pole with the ocean currents for two years. It is 100 m long and weighs 1,000 t. Construction of the platform will start in January 2022.
The logistics network Astre, founded in 1992 in Nantes, France, currently has 3.4 million sqm of storage space with its 160 members in 383 locations in Europe. (sh)
