Exploring nuclear propulsion for container ships
Lloyd's Register (LR) and Core Power have launched a joint study to explore the regulatory framework required for a next-generation nuclear-propelled feeder containership in Europe.
This collaboration, which includes Maersk, aims to assess the safety rules, operational considerations, and regulatory updates necessary to integrate nuclear power into maritime operations. It will help determine if nuclear propulsion could be a viable path towards decarbonising the shipping industry while addressing challenges related to safety, waste management, and regulatory acceptance.
