Expanding into eastern Switzerland
ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is augmenting its services between Vorarlberg (Austria) and eastern Switzerland. At the beginning of 2022, the railway is launching a three weekly transfer train linking the Wolfurt terminal in Austria with the two Swiss terminals in Frenkendorf near Basel and Niederglatt near Zurich.
From Wolfurt, there are three weekly connections to the port of Rotterdam. As a new offer, one of these roundtrips will be routed through Frenkendorf.
The Wolfurt – Rotterdam service is booming: RCG is expecting record volumes of 18,500 teu this year – 1,500 teu more than in 2020. Since the introduction of the Wolfurt – Rotterdam link five years ago, the number of freight trains and containers has risen by around 70%. (ben)
