European cargo hubs in 2024 – Istanbul tops list for first time
The traffic report for the full year 2024, released yesterday by ACI Europe, has confirmed that European airfreight soared in 2024 – led by Istanbul.
Freight traffic in the European airport network grew by 13.2% in 2024, with EU+ airports up by 12.4% and non-EU+ hubs growing by 18.4%.
Istanbul overtook Frankfurt as Europe’s busiest cargo hub, handling 1.97 million t (+39% compared to 2023). Frankfurt followed with 1.95 million t (–2.5%), ahead of Paris CDG (1.87 million t, –1.3%), London Heathrow (1.53 million t, –3.2%) and Amsterdam Schiphol (1.49 million t, –5%).
Total freight volumes stood 11.8% above 2019’s pre-pandemic levels, reflecting continued strong demand. (ah)
