Europe's largest photovoltaic plant
Europe’s largest rooftop photovoltaic plant – totalling up to 450,000 sqm - will be installed at the port of Barcelona. Completion is set for 2026.
The project will be carried out in the ZAL Port, the port’s intermodal logistics platform. Cilsa, manager of ZAL Port and designer of the plant, has drawn up a multi-phase plan. The first step was to install over 90,000 sqm of solar panels on Decathlon’s warehouse. This will be used as a shared self-consumption plant equivalent to the energy consumption of 8,493 people.
Next up is the installation of solar panels on warehouses in the ZAL Prat and ZAL Barcelona areas. These are set to cover 100% of energy consumed in those areas.
The project will eventually reach all parts of the site and strives to generate 50,000 MWh per year as a surplus of green energy for the port community and the port of Barcelona. (mk)
