Euroairport remains cautious

Compared to 2021, cargo business at Basel-Mulhouse airport (Euroairport) remained stable in 2022, despite a slight decline of 4.2% (114'320 t) in total freight volume (2019: 106'075 t). Express freight dropped by 7% (+4.6%/2019), while general cargo posted a downswing of 16.3% for full cargo and an upswing of 4.4% for trucked cargo.

As airport director Matthias Suhr (centre) pointed out during New Year's media conference yesterday, 26 January 2023, freight traffic enables the airport located in the triangle of Switzerland, France and Germany "to play a strategic role in the regional logistics cluster".

Since the global geopolitical end economic situation is still fraught with uncertainties, the outlook will remain cautious. Concerning cargo, the airport is expecting a "stable economic development" in 2023.

Meanwhile, Air Canada Cargo announced that it will begin twice weekly B767 freighter flights from Toronto via Halifax to Basel in April, serving the regional pharma industry. (ah)
