EU redefines conditions for Fehmarn project
For Scandlines and Stena Line, the decision taken by the European Commission regarding the Fehmarnbelt fixed link at the end of March further speciifies the existing conditions for the project.
After another review, the European Commission concluded that the public financing model which Denmark will deploy to support Femern A/S in the construction of a fixed link is in line with state aid. This state funding will now be limited in quantity – it may be used to cover debts up to a maximum amount of EUR 9.3 billion – and the funding period will be reduced from 55 to 19 years.
The review process had become necessary, because in 2018 the court of the European Union had annulled the original approval given by the European Commission in 2015 and therefore had withdrawn the economic basis for the Fehmarnbelt project.
Scandlines transported more than 700,000 cargo units on the ferry routes Puttgarden-Rødby and Rostock-Gedser in 2018. (mw)
