ETS II: IRU demands a gradual roll-out
The European Parliament has approved the extension of the EU’s emissions trading system (ETS II) to road transport and buildings.
The road transport sector is concerned about this decision which is associated with a very real risk of an increased cost base, without any return and without any realistic chance to shift to zero-emission vehicles any time soon, the International Road Union (IRU) said.
IRU is now calling for a gradual introduction of the ETS for road transports, in line with the rolling out of alternative fuels infrastructure across the EU. In the run-up to the parliamentary vote, IRU had repeatedly pointed out that the ETS II proposal was not a practicable procedure for the industry. (ben)
