Estonian carrier shifts goods from road to rail
Estonia’s state-owned transport and logistics company, Operail, operated its first train service on the domestic Tartu-Sillamäe-Tartu container line last week.
The company says that the container line from Tartu to the port of Muuga, which went into operation last year, has reduced traffic volumes on the country’s main highways by more than 400 trucks per month, and the new Sillamäe line that opened last week reflects the interest in hauling containers on domestic routes.
In order to improve service on domestic freight lines even further, Operail plans to make further investments in the development of the Tartu loading yard this spring. The lighting and security systems will be modernised and the loading area delimited. (ben)
