Enlarging the Manila terminal
The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship of ICTSI, a port and terminal operator headquartered in the Philippines, is growing. The expansion of Berth 8 will increase the terminal’s capacity from 3.3 million teu to 3.5 million teu.
Part of the project is an extension of Berth 8 with a designed depth of 15 m (currently 13.5 m) and the construction of a 12-hectare backup area. With the additional 200,000 teu capacity, the port will be able to dock ULCVs of up to 18,000 teu.
Phase one of Berth 8, which involves the construction of the yard area, has already been finalised. When completed, Berth 8 will add a total of 400 m quay to the infrastructure. Along with port equipment, the expansion is estimated to cost PHP 15 billion (USD 273 million) with 13.5 m alongside deepening to 15 m. In the end, MICT will have a total berth length of 2,300 m. (sh)
