Energy transition in the Port of Barcelona
The port of Barcelona and its terminals are already involved in the energy transition, and in 2020 the 14 terminals invested around EUR 1.6 million in projects to decarbonise operations, reduce emissions and generate renewable energy.
The port subsidised these endeavours with nearly EUR 900,000. The port also applies environmental discounts to shipowners, to promote energy efficiency, the use of natural gas and batteries and reduce emissions. The annual discounts amount to around EUR 2.3 million on average.
Jordi Vila, the port's head of environmental management, said that “some of the terminals will continue to invest in photovoltaic electricity generation in 2021.”
Port president Mercè Conesa added that “these companies work hand in hand with us to prepare for the energy transition, which is key to becoming a carbon-neutral port by 2050.”
