Eight for decarbonisation in Antwerp
Halving CO2 emissions by 2030: the initiative launched by a consortium comprising Air Liquide, BASF, Borealis, Exxon Mobil, Ineos 7, Total Energies, Fluxys and the Port of Antwerp aims to support the industry's efforts by establishing a joint CO2 infrastructure.
The project has now reached a new milestone with the start of technical studies. They will further investigate the construction of a central "backbone" throughout the Port of Antwerp along the industrial areas on the right and left banks of the Scheldt.
The technical studies will also explore plans for a joint CO2 liquefaction plant with intermediate storage and ship loading facilities for cross-border transport. It would be one of the world’s first and largest multimodal CO2 export facilities with public access.
Following completion of the technical studies, a final investment decision for the first phase is expected at the end of 2022.The seven chemical and energy companies aim to make a significant contribution to Belgium's and the EU's climate targets. (sh)
