Eco-truck plan to accelerate decarbonisation
The International Road Union (IRU) has renewed calls to promote the use of eco-trucks to boost transport decarbonisation, including harmonising rules for cross-border operations.
Eco-trucks carry more goods than standard vehicle combinations and reduce fuel consumption per tkm by up to 35%. Two of this eco-vehicles carry the cargo of three standard trucks, instantly cutting the number of trucks on the road.
Replacing just 30% of the global truck fleet involved in regional and long haul operations with eco-trucks would thus immediately reduce CO2 emissions by 237 million t annually. With goods road transport set to triple by 2050, this figure would rise to 700 million t annually by 2050.
Over the next three decades, the use of eco-trucks could lower the total volume of CO2 emissions by up to 13.5 billion t, IRU said. (ben)
