Eco locomotive replaces old switcher in California

The US shortline railroad, Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad (STE), part of Omnitrax, has introduced a new environment-friendly locomotive at the STE depot in San Juaquin County CA (USA).

The new STE locomotive, built by Knoxville Locomotive Works, is an EPA tier-4 compliant unit delivering 1,050 hp. It was purchased with the help of a grant from the San Joaquin Valley unified air pollution central district to replace older locomotives with new, energy efficient models.

Omnitrax is currently working to make sure the STE’s previous locomotive, a historic 60-year old SW 1200 class switcher, is preserved and finds an appropriate new home. (ben)
