Eco-friendly 'first and last' mile locomotive launched

Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) has successfully completed trials with two new US EPA Tier 4-compliant low-emission locomotives. They are now in service on G&W’s subsidiary California Northern Railroad (CFNR). The new locomotives were purchased in conjunction with USD 3.7 million in grant funding from the state of California.

The two new 2,400-horsepower diesel locomotives, which provide the ‘first and last mile’ of freight service, use selective catalytic reduction technology to ensure fuel savings of 25% and reduce diesel emissions by 80% compared to the two circa-1976 locomotives being replaced.

CFNR serves businesses on 412 km of track between Los Banos and Tehama (CA), transporting 25,000 annual carloads of diverse freight. (ben)
