Earning a profit despite pandemic
Despite a decline in traffic volume, BLS Cargo achieved a positive annual result of CHF 1.9 million in 2020. The Swiss railfreight operator reported sales of CHF 277 million, 5.5% less than in the previous year. Traffic volume fell by 10% to 19,956 trains.
The decline in traffic was a direct consequence of the corona pandemic, with factory closures during the first lockdown in spring having a particularly strong impact. Furthermore, the important transit axis via Lötschberg-Simplon was completely closed for several weeks last summer due to construction work.
BLS Cargo started well in 2021. The carrier reports that the second wave of the pandemic has had a much weaker impact on transport volumes than the first wave. (ben)
