E-power for inland navigation in Brazil
Hidrovias do Brasil has commissioned a new project to retrofit its push-barge ‘Herkules V’, to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and lower operating costs in its inland shipping services in Brazil. The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä will carry out a major re-powering project on the inland waterway vessel.
The contract includes three engines, three fixed pitch propellers, three gearboxes, and propulsion controls. It is estimated that the conversion will result in significant annual fuel savings, based on 5,000 operating hours, as well as related cost savings in parts, services, and oil lubrication consumption.
"The ‘Herkules V’ re-powering project will support this commitment by reducing the environmental impact, while enhancing the efficiency and safety of our operations,” said Ricardo Brandalise, head of maintenance in Brazil and Paraguay.
The equipment required for the conversion is scheduled for delivery in December 2022, and the project is expected to be completed by February 2023. (sh)
