Duisport's Q3/2020 comes out strongly
Container traffic of Europe's largest inland port in Duisburg (duisport) was slightly higher than last year. "This is by no means a foregone conclusion in view of the current situation," emphasised duisport's CEO Erich Staake. Duisport's container volumes are now 2% above last year's levels. This was not to be expected at this time of crisis. Transports to and from China are the driving force behind this improvement.
Meanwhile, roughly a third of the total trade volume shipped by freight train between Europe and China is handled via the logistics hub Duisburg, and the amount of traffic on the New Silk Road has almost doubled compared to the previous year. It already accounts for 8 % of the duisport group's total container throughput.
Staake however dampens too high expectations: "In 2020, total cargo handling will be 4 – 5% lower than last year's levels, owing to the decline in coal and steel shipments." (cd)
