Duisport's container throughput on track
Duisport, operator of the inland port of Duisburg, processed 4.1 million teu in 2018, on a par with 2017’s record volume. Container handling is the German port’s most important business sector as it accounts for 55% of the entire throughput.
The overall throughput fell from 68.3 million t in 2017 to 65.3 million t last year. The main reason was the prolonged low water period that caused a 10% decrease in the bulk cargo sector.
2018 was also characterised by stabile tonnage in the mineral oil and chemical sector, but a substantial decline in steel. Coal handling shrank ever further due to Germany’s energy transition policy.
In contrast, business with China became increasingly important. For example, about 35 – 40 trains per week now run between Duisport and a dozen destinations in China. (kd)
