Drone services to support island populations
Setouchi Town, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture and Japan Airlines (JAL) jointly established the drone operation company “Amami Island Drones Co.” on 30 November 2023. It began providing drone-based services to residents in Amami Setouchi Town in February this year.
With the aim of creating a sustainable town where “everyone wants to continue living,” Setouchi Town has launched these deliveries as a new administrative service to ensure the safety and security of the livelihoods and maintain the functions of local communities.
Setouchi Town and JAL have also set up another JV called “Amami Island Drone,” which will transport emergency relief supplies to isolated villages in the event of a disaster, and regularly deliver medical supplies and daily necessities to residents during normal times. (cj)
