Dredging key to Dutch-Belgian resilience
A new report by NMT-IRO and Erasmus University highlights the strategic importance of the Dutch and Belgian dredging sector for coastal protection, port access and the energy transition.
The industry, which supports over 350,000 jobs annually through critical port and infrastructure projects, is vital to regional infrastructure and resilience. However, state-supported competitors, especially from China, are gaining ground. “Without joint investment in talent, innovation and maritime strength, we risk losing global relevance,” said Jeroen de Graaf, director at NMT-IRO.
The report presents three scenarios for the sector’s future and calls for stronger public-private cooperation to maintain the ability to compete. Dredging isn’t only about economics, but also about securing Europe's position in global trade and climate resilience. (ah)
