DNV approval for new ammonia-fuel vessel design

DNV has granted HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) approval in principle (AIP) for a 15,000 teu ammonia dual-fuel container vessel, marking a significant step towards using ammonia as a marine fuel. This design incorporates safety innovations, including enhanced ammonia tank construction, advanced fire safety, and boil-off gas handling systems.

The project also assessed the toxicity, corrosiveness, and nitrous oxide emissions of ammonia by simulating fuel pipe leak scenarios. These analyses led to an advanced ammonia release mitigation system, which reduced hazardous areas and improved safety on the vessel’s weather deck.

The AIP underscores HD HHI’s commitment to decarbonisation and DNV's role in advancing safe, sustainable shipping solutions. (pb)
