Diving to recover crashed freighter

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending a team of investigators to the ditching site of a freighter aircraft off the Hawaiian island of Oahu to coordinate the recovery of the wreckage from the ocean floor.

The recovery effort is scheduled to begin on or about 9 October 2021. Several NTSB investigators will be aboard the research vessel to coordinate the operation, which is expected to take ten to fourteen days, depending on the weather and other factors.

Rhoades Aviation, Transair Flight 810, a B737-200F bound for Kahului on 2 July, reported anomalies in both engines and subsequently ditched into Mamala Bay shortly after take-off from Honolulu. The two pilots escaped from the wreckage and were rescued by the US Coast Guard and the airport aircraft rescue fire fighting unit. (ah)
