Discussing anti-GHG measures with the IMO

The International Association of Ports and Harbours (Iaph) is taking an active part in the 16th meeting of the IMO's intersessional working group on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships (ISWG-GHG 16) and the 81st meeting of the marine environment protection committee (MEPC 81), running from 11 to 22 March.

The meetings discuss candidate mid-term measures to reduce GHG emissions, including technical and economic elements, with an aim to agree on a basket of measures by 2025 for implementation in 2027. Iaph, represented by Rhona Macdonald and technical director Antonis Michail, along with representatives from the port of Seattle and Iaph associate member Starcrest, has developed an easy-to-use guide to provide clarity on the submissions and proposals under discussion. This guide, compiled by Iaph policy and IMO liaison officer Macdonald, is available for Iaph members.

Macdonald will also report on the outcomes of these meetings to the Iaph climate and energy committee, which comprises environmental, safety, and advisory specialists from Iaph's 180-strong port membership. Additionally, the Iaph team will present updates in person at the upcoming Iaph technical committee days, scheduled for 25-27 March at the TT Club headquarters in London. (pb)
