Derailment results in safety measures
The US class I railway Norfolk Southern has presented a six-point plan to immediately enhance the safety of its operations. The initiatives are based on the preliminary findings published by the National Transportation Safety Board following a derailment in East Palestine OH.
The rail company will immediately begin to enhance the hot-bearing detector network, deploy more acoustic bearing detectors, accelerate its digital train inspection programme and support a strong safety culture, inter alia. Norfolk Southern will also join the Federal Railroad Administration’s ‘confidential close call reporting system’, to further encourage railroaders to speak up if they observe anything unsafe. (ben)
