Deployment of scrubbers on the rise worldwide
The number of ships with installed or on-demand scrubbers is currently at almost 4,050 units, according to the latest data from DNV GL's 'alternative fuels observatory'. Although new orders for this technology slowed down as the sector approached 2020, the latest data still represent an increase from the 3,881 vessels accounted for by DNV GL earlier this year.
All this despite the notable reduction in the price differential between HSFO and VLSFO in the last two months and the collapse of the price of crude oil.
Some analysts suspect that the number of vessels equipped with scrubbers is somewhat higher, as DNV GL bases its total data on informatio on confirmed orders from manufacturers, and it's very difficult to account for all units sold to small, new, private companies in the sector. They also agree that lowering the price differential between HSFO and VLSFO below expectations is not going to be a problem for new orders. (mw)
