Decarbonising terminals with e-bikes: a caution
TT Club warns that the increasing deployment of e-bikes, e-scooters, and e-motorbikes as cleaner alternatives to diesel vehicles in ports and terminals poses notable risks.
While these vehicles support decarbonisation efforts, their integration into facilities designed for larger equipment poses challenges, including reduced visibility, traffic management issues, and unsafe navigation on surfaces intended for heavy loads.
TT Club emphasises the need for careful traffic safety planning, including licensing, training, and PPE requirements. Additionally, thorough assessments and proper infrastructure are required to mitigate the risk of fire during charging and maintenance.
Operators must also address the potential for collisions between smaller vehicles and heavy machinery and ensure that charging stations are strategically located to prevent further hazards. Striking a balance between innovation and safety will be critical as the industry moves toward greener transport solutions. (pb)
