Danish fleet expands
The fleet of ships sailing under the Danish flag continues to grow. A political strategy initiated more than a decade ago has increased the total tonnage of Danish vessels by 43%.
As recently published by the Danish Maritime Authority, December 2021 saw vessels with 23.2 million GT on the seas of the world, which is 4% more than the 22.3 million registered a year earlier.
Over the past year, 15 vessels were added to a current total of 779 registered units under the Danish flag. This is an increase of 2.6% in units. Denmark thus becomes the eleventh flag in tonnage of the world’s fleet.
Jacob Meldgaard, managing director of the shipping company Torm and president of Danish Shipping, which added 16 ships to the Danish flag in 2021, was quoted saying that “we analyse the pros and cons of different options every time we register a ship. Our conclusion is that under the Danish flag we can be competitive.” (sh)
