Damen unveils fuel-flexible tug
Damen Shipyards is preparing for future maritime challenges with the development of the ASD Tug 2812 FF, a fuel-flexible tug designed to operate on various dual-fuel arrangements. Anticipating the need for zero emissions by 2050, Damen aims to have the first vessels operational by 2026. The design includes adaptations for less energy-dense fuels, such as methanol, while maintaining the tug's compact size.
Collaborating with Bureau Veritas, flag state authorities, and Caterpillar, Damen has developed solutions to meet safety standards, such as using nitrogen-filled spaces to mitigate explosion risks and creating tanks that handle pressure fluctuations without hazardous venting. These advancements ensure the tug's commercial viability and readiness for a greener future, the company said in its press release. (pb)
