Damen and Gerdes Green expand green fleet
Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Gerdes Green for a second combi freighter (CF) 3850, which contains green innovations to increase efficiency and sustainability.
The vessel will feature a hybrid battery system for short-duration electric sailing, shore power connectivity, low-emission bio-diesel fuel, and wind-assisted propulsion using foldable ventofoils.
This collaboration marks a step towards carbon-neutral shipping, supported by German government subsidies under the Namkü directive. Damen's long-standing partnership with Reederei Gerdes emphasises a shared commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. The new vessel is part of Damen's broader goal to become the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder. (pb)
