Damaged intermediate ceiling already removed
Repairs in the Gotthard road tunnel are now underway. The damaged intermediate ceiling has already been removed, and work to replace it is to begin shortly. A steel construction with the same cross-sectional area will be installed. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) still expects that the Gotthard road tunnel can be reopened to traffic this week.
The damage may have been caused by stress redistribution in the rock. Last Sunday afternoon (10 September 2023), the tunnel had to be closed because pieces of concrete had fallen from the ceiling onto the roadway. An initial survey showed a 25 m long crack in the intermediate ceiling. (ben)
