Cuba upgrades 1,000 km of its rail line
RZD International and the Union of Railways of Cuba have signed a contract for the reconstruction and modernisation of railway infrastructure in Cuba. The contract stipulates the upgrade of more than 1,000 km of railway lines, the installation of new signalling systems at stations, hauls and level crossings.
In addition, the company will take over the design and construction of the integrated traffic control centre. The implementation of the contract will result in an increase of average train speed up to 120 km/h, a 1.7-fold rise in cargo traffic and a 3-fold increase in passenger traffic. The expected duration of the project is ten years with an estimated cost of EUR 1.9 billion. (ben)
