Containers galore
In a recent survey, London-based maritime consultancy Drewry analysed the amount of available containers worldwide. Drewry's senior analyst for container equipment, John Fossey, was quoted that he expected high numbers of leased boxes to be returned to leasing companies in the course of 2023.
According to estimates, falling consumer demand and smoother supply chains, combined with a high production rate of containers in the past, led to an overhang of approximately 5 million teu worldwide.
Fossey believes that, due to shifts in usage, sales to secondary markets for storage etc., a major part of the 5 million teu surplus will have been removed from the market in the course of 2023. (sh)
