Container throughput index takes a dive

The container throughput index published by the German research body Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI - Leibniz) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) fell to 133.9 according to February’s flash estimate. The index stood at 138.2 in January 2019.

The month-on-month decrease was the fourth strongest to date. The throughput in China’s ports plunged noticeably, but that was influenced by the Chinese New Year.

The flash estimate for February is based on data from 41 international ports, which account for about 72% of the global container throughput. The 0.6 point downward revision of the January value is due to a revaluation of the seasonal influence. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for March 2019 will be published on 26 April 2019. (kd)
