Container index climax

The container throughput index of the German RWI – Leibniz institute for economic research and the institute of shipping economics and logistics (ISL) showed a robust improvement in October, rising from (corrected) 119.6 to 122.6 points, an all-time high. The leap forward was again felt in Chinese ports as well as on a global level.

The northern range of Europe index, which is an indicator for economic development in northern Europe, went up to 114.1, just 1.1 points below the level before the corona crises started in early 2020.

The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on data from 46 ports which handle around 70% of the throughput described in the index. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for November 2020 will be published on 21 December 2020.

RWI economic director Torsten Schmidt said: "Global trade was very dynamic in October, but the consequences of the second wave of anti-pandemic measures remain to be seen." (cd)
